Babesia equi and Babesia caballi
Babesia equi (= Theileria equi) and Babesia caballi are
obligate intra-erythrocytic tick-borne protozoans causing equine
piroplasmosis. Horses who survive the initial fever, anemia and icterus
become lifelong carriers. Detection of this carrier state is also of
major economic importance. Substrate Slides are prepared with infected
horse erythrocytes, where the merozoites are visible as compact
inclusions by IFA staining.
